Bridgetown: Namibia clinched victory in the first super over of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup, defeating Oman by 11 runs.
In the third match of the T20 World Cup, the encounter between Oman and Namibia ended in a tie, leading to a thrilling Super Over showdown.
All-rounder David Wiza and captain Gerhard Erasmus took the crease for Namibia in the Super Over, facing Bilal Khan’s bowling for Oman.
Wiza kicked off the Super Over with a boundary followed by a six off the second delivery, adding two more runs off the third ball before concluding with a single off the fourth.
Captain Erasmus then sealed Namibia’s innings with two consecutive boundaries off the fifth and sixth deliveries, amassing 21 runs. Oman was set a target of 22 runs to secure victory in the super over.
The two Group B contenders clashed in Bridgetown, where Namibia won the toss and opted to field against Oman. Batting first, Oman posted 109 runs in 19.4 overs, setting Namibia a target of 110 runs.
Oman’s opening batsman Keship Parjapati was adjudged LBW by Trumpelman on the first ball of the innings, with Trumpelman also dismissing Oman’s captain Aqib Ilyas on the second delivery of his first over.
For Oman, Khalid Keil contributed 34 runs off 39 balls, while Zeeshan Maqsood and Ayan Khan added 22 and 15 runs respectively. Kaleemullah managed 11 runs off nine balls, but no other batsman reached double figures.
In the bowling department, Namibia’s Trumpelman clinched four wickets for 21 runs in four overs, supported by David Welle with three wickets, Gerhard with two, and Bernard Schulz with one.
In reply, Namibia posted 109 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs against Oman.
Namibia’s playing XI comprised captain Gerhard Erasmus, Nicolas Dion, Michael van Langen, Jean Frelinck, Milan Kruger, Zane Green, JJ Summit, David Welle, Ruben Trumpelman, Bernard Schulz, and Tangeni Langemani.
Under the leadership of captain Aqib Ilyas, the Oman squad included Naseem Khushi, Zeeshan Maqsood, Khalid Kail, Ian Khan, Muhammad Nadeem, Mehran Khan, Shakeel Ahmed, Kaleemullah, Keship Prajapati, and Bilal Khan.
