Heavy rainfall in Islamabad has caused the water level in Rawal Dam to rise dangerously, prompting the authorities to open the dam’s spillways on Sunday to release excess water and prevent possible flooding.
According to the Islamabad Deputy Commissioner’s office, the water level had exceeded the dam’s storage capacity, leading to the immediate opening of spillways. Emergency teams, including magistrates, rescue personnel, ambulances, and Union Council staff, have been deployed at key bridges to manage any potential impact.
Residents living near rivers and canals have been advised to stay alert and avoid going near water bodies. The administration has also stepped up monitoring efforts amid forecasts of more rainfall in the next 24 hours by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
It should be noted that on Friday night Twin cities Islamabad and Rawalpindi witnesses heavy rains and as a result urban flooding. Parts of Punjab including Chakwal also received torrential rain.
