KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has interviewed the three candidates, shortlisted for the post of regular Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), while the summary has been sent to the provincial cabinet for final decision.
According to details, final approval was to be issued by the Chief Minister of Sindh, however, Murad Ali Shah referred the matter to the provincial Cabinet.
The final candidates include Former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of JSMU Dr Lubna Baig, Dr Amjad Siraj Memon, Principal of Dow Medical College, and Dr Khawaja Mustafa Qadri. Sources have informed that Dr Lubna scored highest marks in the interview and emerged as the most suitable candidate for the post of JSMU’s Vice-Chancellor.
However, the Sindh government is likely to appoint Sharjeel Inam Memon’s Amjad Siraj Memon, who came second on the Merit list, as Vice-Chancellor. Relevant Sources have informed that efforts are being made to appoint Amjad Siraj as VC.
Sources further claimed that Dr Amjad Siraj Memon has family terms with several leaders Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). He was also an obstacle in the extension of Dow Medical University Vice-Chancellor Saeed Qureshi, sources added. However, despite Siraj Memon being second on merit list, he has more chances to be appointed on the post.
Earlier, Chairman Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Asim Hussain demanded that the search committee set up in connection with the appointment of vice-chancellors in government universities in Sindh be suspended and reorganized.
In a letter to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the chairman of Sindh Higher Education Commission said that the recently appointed vice-chancellors by the search committee do not comply with the HEC standard.
“There is favouritism. I don’t have proof but there is definitely moral corruption and unfit people have been appointed vice-chancellors who carry baggage,” Dr Asim wrote in the letter.
