TOKYO: Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe has resigned from his designation over health problems.
According to details, the Japanese prime minister resigned over health conditions putting an end to a record-setting tenure with no clear successor yet in place. Reportedly, he was a patient of ulcerative colitis disease for many years but his condition has worsened recently.
As per Japanese media, the 65-year-old Abe wanted to avoid causing problems for his government. Earlier this week, he became Japan’s longest continuously serving prime minister after taking office in 2012.
In 2007, he had resigned immediately from an earlier term as prime minister because of his struggles with ulcerative colitis, a chronic condition affecting the large intestine.
Reports about Abe’s possible resignation were surfacing after his two recent hospital visits for unspecified medical checks. The country’s defence and military spendings are said to be increased during the tenure of PM Abe.
The upcoming election would be followed by a parliamentary vote to elect a new prime minister for the country. The winner would hold the post until the end of Abe’s term next month.
