SHC moved against anti-encroachment operation in Karachi

KARACHI: A petition has been filed in the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday against a wide-scale anti-encroachment operation in Karachi.

The owners of shops located in Korangi Sector 44-A have filed a petition against demolition notices issued for 312 shops of the Korangi Welfare Association.

The petition stated that the shops are established on the welfare plot since 1963 and applications were sent to the Sindh chief minister for regularisation but no response was given. It stated that the anti-encroachment cell had issued notice to demolish the shops and implementation of the decision will affect the livelihood of shopkeepers.

The petition urged the high court to stop concerned officials from demolishing their shops. Sindh Chief Minister, Commissioner Karachi, Karachi Development Authority (KDA) Director-General were made respondents in the case.

It must be mentioned the that Sindh High Court (SHC) last Thursday also ordered the KDA to launch an anti-encroachment drive in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of Karachi to vacate occupied lands. The judgment was passed on a plea submitted in SHC accusing the KDA of supporting the land encroachers in the area

The court directed the KDA to launch a massive drive to vacate the occupied land. Director KDA informed the court that the land mafia attacks their staff whenever they start an operation. The SHC bench asked the Director General (DG) Rangers and DIG Police to provide security and support the KDA staff during the drive.
