Pakistan created history by chasing down huge 345-run target against Sri Lanka overtaking Ireland to claim the record of the highest-ever run chase in the history of ODI World Cups.
Chasing a massive total, Pakistan lost key wickets of Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam early in the innings.
However, Rizwan and Abdullah kept their composure and led Pakistan’s historic chase against Sri Lanka.
Rizwan’s unbeaten 131 and Shafique’s commanding 113 off 103 balls propelled the unprecedented World Cup run chase, leaving the Sri Lankan bowling attack battling to hold on to their acceptable score.
With their 328 runs against England in the 2011 World Cup, Ireland held the record for the biggest successful run chase.
Shafique, who was only playing in his fifth ODI, scored 113 to make his World Cup debut, with 10 fours and three sixes. While Rizwan used 97 balls to hit his third ODI century, which included seven fours and two sixes.
Earlier, In-form Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama both hit centuries to put a huge total of 344 on the board.
The 28-year-old Mendis reached his century off 65 balls with 13 fours and four sixes.
For Mendis, it was his fifth score over 50 in his last seven innings, a run which also included 76 in his team’s opening defeat to South Africa on Saturday.
He had smashed an impressive 158 in a World Cup warm-up game against Afghanistan.
Mendis had a lucky escape, however, on Tuesday when, having made just 12, Imam-ul-Haq dropped a simple catch off the bowling of Shaheen Shah Afridi.
He was eventually dismissed for a career best 122 with 14 fours and six sixes when Imam held onto a catch off Hasan Ali.
Samarawickrama, who shared a third-wicket partnership of 111 with Mendis, went to a maiden ODI century off 82 balls with 10 fours and two sixes.
