Senior journalist MutiUllah Jan was released from Adiala Jail after the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court approved his bail for a surety bond of 10,000 rupees.
The court held a hearing today regarding a drug and terrorism case against Jan. The judge remarked that, as per the order of the High Court, MutiUllah Jan was being sent to jail on judicial remand.
Jan’s lawyer requested that the bail petition be heard immediately, and the judge responded that the petition, which was 7 pages long, would be taken under notice, allowing the prosecution to present any arguments. The judge also criticized the way journalists were treated, referencing a conversation outside the courtroom involving a prosecutor.
At one point, MutiUllah Jan himself addressed the court, stating that he had just learned about the incident and apologized for any misunderstanding. Subsequently, the court granted bail to MutiUllah Jan against a bond of 10,000 rupees.
Earlier this week, Jan’s family claimed that he and fellow journalist Saqib Bashir were abducted by unidentified individuals from the parking lot of PIMS Hospital on Wednesday night. However, Bashir was released shortly after.
Yesterday, the Margalla Police in Islamabad revealed Jan’s arrest and filed charges against him under various sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act, including accusations of assaulting police officers and carrying drugs.
