The Saudi Arabian embassy in Kabul has officially resumed its full operations, marking a significant shift in diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan after more than three years of suspended activities. The embassy’s announcement, made via social media on December 22, confirmed the resumption of services in line with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to support the Afghan people.
This development comes after Saudi Arabia withdrew its diplomats in 2021 following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan. At the time, the country cited the unstable security situation as the reason for the decision. In the months that followed, Saudi Arabia offered limited consular services and continued to provide humanitarian aid, primarily through its King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief).
Although the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to provide specific details on the level of diplomatic representation in Kabul, the move signals a renewed interest in re-establishing ties. Saudi Arabia has long maintained a humanitarian focus in its dealings with Afghanistan, providing much-needed aid to the country’s population.
Despite some international shifts, including Russia’s indications of moving toward recognizing the Taliban government, Afghanistan remains without formal recognition from any nation. The resumption of Saudi embassy operations, however, may pave the way for further diplomatic engagement, although the Taliban’s political status continues to remain a point of contention on the global stage.
