NEW DELHI: India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has donated 10 million rupees to a fundraising campaign that is helping hospitals treating COVID-19 patients procure oxygen concentrators.
India is witnessing an unprecedented surge in COVID-19 infections and recorded a single-day rise of 386,452 new cases. The health-care system crumbled due to the crisis with hospitals struggling to provide oxygen.
Mission Oxygen, which describes itself as a non-for-profit said it has placed an order for 1,365 concentrators from China and thanked Tendulkar for his donation.
“His donation of rupees 1 crore to Mission Oxygen in its endeavour to procure and provide life-saving oxygen concentrators to hospitals across the nation in this time of need is incredibly heart-warming,” they said in a statement.
Tendulkar in a tweet said that providing oxygen was the “need of the hour” amid a devastating second wave in the country.
Several Indian states run out of coronavirus vaccines a day before a planned widening of a nationwide inoculation drive, as new infections in the pandemic-hit country broke another daily record.
