Karachi: Another person has died from rabies in Karachi following a dog bite, highlighting the growing threat posed by stray dogs in the city.
According to officials at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, the victim, identified as Karamat, had contracted rabies after being bitten by a dog three months ago. He was admitted to Jinnah Hospital on 8 January, where he later passed away.
The 42-year-old was a resident of Gulshan-e-Ma‘mar and worked as a plumber. The Sindh Health Department has confirmed that this brings the number of rabies-related deaths in the province to two so far this year.
Meanwhile, a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah reviewed measures to control rabies across the province. It was decided that 300 rabies centres across all districts would be upgraded and made fully operational.
The chief secretary said that treatment facilities for rabies would be available at intervals of every 15 kilometres across the province to ensure timely medical care for victims.
