LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar on Monday has accorded approval to restore local bodies in the province.
A session chaired by Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on granted nod to make the local councils functional in Punjab. The meeting decided to remove administrators of the local councils in the province.
Chief Minister Buzdar directed the provincial local government department to issue notification for restoration of the local councils in Punjab.
Buzdar said that the government has decided to make the local government councils functional in the province. “Every step will be taken in the light of the constitution and the law.”
The session was attended by Local Government Minister Mehmood ur Rasheed, Advocate General Punjab, secretary local government and other concerned officials.
It may be noted that the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a recent contempt of court hearing had shown resentment over the LB bodies secretary when he asked for more time for restoration of the LB system in the province. CJP Gulzar Ahmed had given the deadline of October 20, to the Punjab government to restore the local bodies system as it is the third tier of the state.
In its March 25 verdict, the Supreme Court had directed the provincial government to restore the local government institutions.
