The Punjab government has decided to take strict action against people who litter in public spaces, including outside homes, shops, and on roads, as part of efforts to strengthen the province’s cleanliness system.
The decision was discussed during a meeting chaired by Punjab Minister for Local Government Zeeshan Rafiq in Lahore on Friday.
The meeting reviewed sanitation fee collection and proposed punitive measures to discourage the spread of waste.
Briefing the participants, the Director General of the Suthra Punjab Authority said that establishing a stable and efficient waste management system was key to ensuring long-term cleanliness across Punjab.
Zeeshan Rafiq stressed that strengthening the system was a top priority for the government.
Officials informed the meeting that the minimum monthly sanitation fee has been fixed at Rs200 for rural households and Rs300 for urban households.
The minister added that sanitation fees would be collected entirely through digital platforms to ensure transparency.
Zeeshan Rafiq also announced that fines would be imposed on individuals found dumping garbage outside their homes, shops, or on roads.
He clarified that the aim of these penalties is social reform and promoting responsible behaviour, not generating revenue.
The minister directed the Suthra Punjab Authority to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign, including cleanliness camps and social media outreach, to educate citizens about hygiene and their civic duties.
