The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to introduce a new licensing category for Virtual Private Network (VPN) registration after previous attempts to regulate VPN services failed to achieve the desired results.
In a move aimed at addressing the issue of unregistered VPNs, PTA will now allow companies to apply for licenses to offer VPN services. Any VPN service not provided by licensed companies will be considered unregistered and subsequently blocked. This initiative is expected to help authorities monitor VPN traffic, as the anonymity provided by VPN services has posed significant challenges for regulatory oversight.
In a recent press release, PTA announced the resumption of issuing class licenses for data service providers in Pakistan. VPN service providers will now be required to obtain a data class license in order to offer VPN and related services. This new licensing category, alongside existing licenses for internet, cellular, and vehicle tracking companies, will provide a more regulated framework for VPN services.
The initiative will enable local companies that comply with Pakistan’s laws and regulations to offer proxy services. As most VPN providers currently operate as foreign companies, this new system will allow PTA to regulate these services more effectively.
