Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) shot up to 172,167.63 points in intra-day trading on Monday, but it could not sustain the momentum and closed 200 points in red.

At close, the benchmark index settled at 171,204.17, reflecting a loss of 200.31 points, or 0.12%.

Selling was observed across several major sectors, including cement, commercial banking, fertilizer, oil and gas exploration, oil marketing companies, power generation, and refineries.

PSX had ended the previous week on a positive note. The KSE-100 Index closed at 171,404 points, marking a 0.91% week-on-week increase, supported by an unexpected cut in the policy rate, improving external accounts, and continued strength in banking shares, even as volumes remained subdued and some profit-taking emerged.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee showed slight strength against the US dollar in early interbank trading on Monday.

By 10am, the local currency was trading at 280.00 per dollar, up by Rs0.25, representing a 0.09% appreciation.

The rupee had also ended the previous week marginally higher, posting a gain of Rs0.06, or 0.02%, against the greenback in the interbank market.
