Islamabad: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) lawmaker Sharmila Farooqi raised the issue of Sindh’s water rights in the National Assembly, warning that the province will not tolerate any unauthorized withdrawal of water from the Indus River.
Addressing the assembly, Farooqi said that Sindh’s representative in the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) was coerced into agreeing to the canal project at gunpoint.
She said that some areas of Sindh lack access to water even for washing the dead.
Farooqi warned that if water is unfairly withdrawn from the Indus River, it will lead to war. She also criticized the government for not purchasing wheat from farmers, saying that this decision has already “killed” the farmers. She added that if Sindh’s farmers do not receive water, they will “die a slow death.”
The PPP lawmaker demanded that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting be convened immediately, as it has not been held for 11 months.
