As the 241 million people of the country gear up for the February 8 elections, campaigning in certain regions remains subdued due to security concerns, with some election candidates facing injuries or even fatalities.
In the latest incident, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) candidate Zulfiqar Shah from Mirpur Khas was wounded in a targeted gun attack.
According to local law enforcement, unidentified assailants opened fire on Zulfiqar Shah, the PPP candidate from PS-46, managing to escape the scene after firing six to seven bullets at Shah’s vehicle. The attack resulted in injuries to the political candidate, who was promptly transported from Mirpur Khas to receive immediate medical attention.
This incident follows a recent grenade attack on the election office of another PPP candidate in Quetta, where three children were injured. The Election Commission has taken note of these security concerns and has requested a report from the chief secretary and IG Balochistan regarding the attack.
The prevailing atmosphere of security threats casts a shadow over the electoral process, with candidates and their teams facing risks as the nation heads towards the polling day on February 8.
