The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has formally demanded the inclusion of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s photo on currency notes. This appeal was made during a seminar held in Lahore, organized by the PPP, to commemorate the legacy of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the party’s founding figure.
The seminar concluded with a resolution, calling for the recognition of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as a national hero and advocating for his image to be featured on currency notes.
It is worth mentioning that in March, the Supreme Court acknowledged the miscarriage of justice in the murder trial of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The Court deemed the trial unfair and lacking proper due process, both during the initial trial and the subsequent appellate review.
Back in March 1979, a seven-judge Supreme Court bench, in a narrow four-to-three decision, upheld the Lahore High Court’s verdict of imposing the death penalty on the former prime minister.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan expressed their support through resolutions. They welcomed the Court’s stance on the presidential reference and urged the federal government to officially recognize Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as a “martyr” and a “National Democratic Hero”, being the country’s first elected Prime Minister.
Additionally, the PPP called for further honors for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, proposing that he be posthumously awarded the title of ‘Quaid-e-Awam’ and the highest civil award of the nation.
Furthermore, the party demanded the construction of a monument in his memory and requested that his tomb be officially designated as a “mausoleum” by the state.
