KARACHI: Incidents of theft of oil from oil tankers, carrying domestic and foreign oil, continue to be reported frequently in several areas of the metropolis, including Gadap, Steel Town, and Shah Latif Town.
According to details, fuel is pilfered from trucks which are supposed to transport it from oil depots to petrol pumps in several areas of Karachi. After stealing oil in large quantity, thieves store it in a nearby enclosed rented accommodation for its sale.
On June 25, 2020, MM News TV revealed that the oil mafia in Malir district is stealing oil worth millions of rupees on daily basis. However, the concerned authorities have not taken any action yet.
Sources have revealed that the district’s police are also allegedly involved in this heinous crime. According to the sources, the ringleaders of the group are Rana Maqbool, Jibran, Khalid alias Shankar, Sami alias TT.
Sources further claimed that Steel Town police receive an alleged bribe of Rs 50,000 from Rana Maqbool on weekly basis. Petroleum dealers have urged oil companies to take responsibility for fuel sent out from terminals.
Shams Shehwani, head of Oil Tankers Owners Association, told M.M News, “There is a big mafia outside every oil terminal. There have been many incidents of theft, but despite being taken to the notice of the police, no action has been taken.”
