Addressing the National Assembly (NA) immediately following the passage of the landmark 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif extended his congratulations to the House and reflected on Pakistan’s security challenges.
The Prime Minister observed that a “rare spirit of cohesion” prevailed among legislators during the passage of the bill, which aims to strengthen the federation, promote inter-provincial harmony, and improve the justice system. “On behalf of all party leaders and myself, I extend congratulations to every member for securing this historic mandate,” he stated, emphasizing that the strong vote of 234 members was a testament to national unity.
PM Sharif specifically thanked President Asif Ali Zardari and the leaders of all coalition parties, stressing that the milestone was a direct result of the trust and cooperation extended by the allies. He noted, “Pakistan’s diplomatic achievements and our gradually improving economic situation are a reflection of the unity we have fostered. We must continue to work together for the country’s development and prosperity.”
The bill, which overhauls the military command structure and introduces the Federal Constitutional Court, now moves forward to secure presidential assent, finalizing one of the most significant constitutional reforms in decades.
Tribute and Security Concerns
Shifting focus, the Prime Minister paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), noting that Siddiqui had served the party with complete dedication and responsibility throughout his political career.
The premier then addressed the country’s security environment, condemning recent acts of terrorism. He highlighted the “cowardly attacks” in Wana, saying the incident tragically reminded the nation of the Army Public School tragedy.
Prime Minister Sharif confirmed that the militants involved in the Wana attack, including elements originating from Afghanistan, have been eliminated. He also expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of twelve people in the Islamabad District Courts attack and condemned the involvement of extremists in both the Wana and Islamabad incidents.
Concluding his remarks on security, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the armed forces for their successful and safe recovery of the students and teachers who had been held captive during the Wana operation.
