ISLAMABAD: An in-camera session of leaders from various political parties began here on Wednesday with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair, to review the regional situation. Leaders from People’s Party, JUI-F, MQM and Balochistan Awami Party’s leaders are attending the session.
The session, being attended by the political leadership and military officials as well, is expected to get a briefing on the regional situation arising out of US-Israeli strikes against Iran.
This came a day after Law Minister Azan Nazeer Tarar, while Speaking in the National Assembly, invited parliamentarians to “sit down and develop a course of action so we can move forward”. “There are sensitivities we have to take into account and things that you cannot discuss openly, considering the tension in the region and our relations with brotherly Muslim countries,” the minister had said.
Sources privy to the developments expressed opinion that Foreign Office officials were all set to brief the parliamentary leaders and political leadership on the situation.
It may be mentioned here that the leaders of opposition in the Senate and the National Assembly didn’t attend the meeting, as the parliamentary leaders of the PTI and the Sunni Ittehad Council announced boycotting the session.
On Feb 28, the United States and Israel jointly launched strikes on Iran, assassinating their spiritual leader Ayotollah Khamenei, resulting in pushing the Middle East into renewed military confrontation. In response, Iran targeted Israel and US bases and foreign missions in the Middle East, and in areas as far as Cyprus.
It is also pertinent to mention that on Monday, March 1, 2026, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly denounced the targeting of Iran’s supreme leader, describing the action as a violation of international norms and established conventions.
PM Shehbaz Sharif said it had long been an accepted principle that heads of state or government should not be targeted in military actions.
