Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday directed officials to accelerate work on the Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme, saying the provision of affordable housing to ordinary citizens remained a top government priority.

Chairing a review meeting on the scheme’s progress, the prime minister said the programme had been launched to help poor and middle-income families secure their own homes.

He instructed government institutions and private banks to provide maximum financing to ensure the scheme’s success.

Shehbaz also directed officials to prepare a strategy for both vertical and horizontal housing models under the programme, allowing apartments and conventional housing projects to be developed according to local needs.

The meeting was briefed that banks had so far approved Rs204 billion in financing for the Apna Ghar Scheme, while Rs27 billion had already been disbursed.

Officials said the Ministry of Housing and Works and the State Bank of Pakistan were reviewing progress on the scheme every week.
