Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved the summary for the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as both Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), forwarding it to the President for formal approval.
Field Marshal Asim Munir will serve as the Chief of Army Staff along with the role of Chief of Defence Forces for a tenure of five years.
He will be Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces.
In addition, the tenure of Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu has been extended by two years. This extension will take effect upon the completion of his current five-year term in March 2026.
Earlier, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, alongside Federal Information Minister Atta Ullah Tarar, held a press conference and urged the public to disregard circulating fake notifications concerning the appointment of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
The federal government was forced to address swirling rumours and viral fake news regarding the appointment of the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) after a number of media outlets, including Geo News, reportedly broadcast or amplified an unverified notification.
