ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Tuesday denounced threats being hurled against the participants and organizers of the Aurat March.
Pakistan Bar Council said that March and peaceful protests are included in the human rights of a human being. The council added that in the event, it is being demanded that women’s right turn into authenticity.
PBC further said congregations of women at public places are a sign of true democracy. The top elected body of lawyers in the country said that they also appealed to the authorities to guarantee the safety of the participants of the event.
PBC support comes after a petition was filed in the Lahore High Court in quest of a permanent ban on the upcoming Aurat March.
During the hearing, the LHC also directed Lahore district authorities to speed up its decision on an application seeking permission to hold the gathering.
LHC Chief Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh said, “The Aurat March could not be stopped under the law and constitution of Pakistan.”
He also directed the marchers to refrain from hate speech and immorality.
The petitioner, Azhar Siddiqui while reiterating his statement from the previous hearing, told the court that they never wanted to stop Aurat March.
Azhar Siddiqui said, “Slogans like ‘Mera Jism Meri Marzi’ (my body, my choice) showed perception in the world that we oppress our women.”
Nighat Dad, who is defending the holding of the march in Court, told the petitioner that he has written in his petition that the march is anti-state, which was a very dangerous claim.
Aurat March will be held across the country on 8 March to observe International Women’s Day.
