Australian captain Pat Cummins has revealed that Indian fans often send mail to his home address, asking for financial assistance, a statement that did not sit well with many Indian fans.
Reflecting on his experiences during the Indian Premier League (IPL), Cummins mentioned on a podcast that he frequently received letters and emails from Indian fans requesting money to cover medical expenses, such as surgery and hospital bills.
After leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to the 2024 IPL final, where they were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Cummins recalled these encounters.
“Some Indian fans send you receipts from a hospital asking if you can pay for surgery or send some money over. You have to feel for them,” he remarked.
These comments sparked a serious response from the cricket community and fans in India. Many expressed their displeasure and anger on social media, accusing Cummins of being rude and insensitive. Some fans argued that such requests might stem from genuine need due to the socioeconomic challenges in certain parts of India.
Cummins’ remarks might have strained his relationship with Indian supporters, overshadowing his achievements on the field in the IPL. His rapport with Indian fans has been shaky, particularly after leading Australia to victory over India in the ICC ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium last November.
