ISLAMABAD: Pakistan witnessed a relatively peaceful month in March with a decrease in militant attacks by 36% compared to February. However, the number of deaths remained almost the same.
According to a report compiled by Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), there were 37 attacks in which 57 people died and 72 were injured in March. In February, 59 people were killed in 58 attacks while 134 were wounded.
The number of suicide bombings also decreased from three in February to one in March.
The PICSS report says that Balochistan saw a 50 percent decrease in militant attacks in March, but the death toll rose, per the statistics broken out by province. In 11 attacks in March, the militants killed 28 persons and injured 35 others.
It says that the tribal districts of KP showed the greatest improvement in the security condition. Six militant assaults were reported in March compared to 16 in February, and there were five as opposed to 16 fatalities.
Militancy increased in mainland KP, where there were 16 recorded attacks that resulted in 21 fatalities and 30 injuries. There were 13 assaults in February, which resulted in six fatalities and eight injuries.
It further says that during March, no militant attack was reported in Punjab, while three people were killed in four attacks reported from Sindh. In February, 10 people were killed and 18 others injured in three attacks in Sindh.
No militant activity was reported from Punjab, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in March.
