ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday condemned the twin suicide blasts at a crowded market in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, which resulted in the loss of 32 precious human lives and injuries to several others.
The Foreign Office in a statement said, “We convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for a speedy recovery of those injured in these gruesome terrorist attacks”.
Pakistan condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and stood in solidarity with the brotherly government and people of Iraq in their fight against terrorism, it added.
Two men blew themselves up in a crowded Baghdad market on Thursday, killing at least 32 people in Iraq’s first big suicide bombing for three years, authorities said, describing it as a possible sign of the reactivation of the Islamic State.
Islamic State claimed responsibility early on Friday for Baghdad’s suicide attack, via the group’s Amaq news agency on its Telegram channel.
According to Iraq’s health ministry, the attack wounded an additional 110 people. Some were still in serious condition, the ministry said.
Attacks such as this in the Iraqi capital have been rare since the military defeat of the “Islamic State” in Iraq in 2017. The updated death toll makes Thursday’s attack the deadliest to hit Baghdad in three years.
