Shehbaz Sharif on Monday enforced a sweeping ban on the use of high-octane fuel in all government vehicles, shortly after authorities raised the petroleum levy on such fuel by Rs200 per litre.
Under the new policy, no government department is allowed to use high-octane fuel at the state’s expense.

The Prime Minister’s Office clarified that in exceptional cases where its use cannot be avoided, the individual using the vehicle must personally cover the cost instead of the government.
This move is part of a wider effort to reduce public spending. Earlier, the government had already introduced measures to cut fuel consumption for official vehicles by 50% and had taken nearly 60% of the government fleet out of operation.
All federal ministries, departments, and affiliated institutions have been instructed to comply with these directives immediately and in full.
