Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq was shot dead after intervening in an alleged attempt to force a young woman into a vehicle at Shaheen Chowk in Islamabad, according to local media reports.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Margalla Police Station, opposite Bahria University. Witnesses said an armed man was involved in a heated confrontation with the woman and was allegedly attempting to force her into a vehicle when Group Captain Asim Tariq, who was passing through the area, stepped in to help.
According to preliminary findings, the officer attempted to defuse the situation and separate the individuals on humanitarian grounds.
The suspect allegedly reacted by opening fire, critically injuring the PAF officer. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene before his body was shifted to a Pakistan Air Force hospital.
Police responded soon after receiving reports of the shooting. Additional SHO Siddiq and duty officer Naveed arrived with a heavy police contingent and took the woman into protective custody.
The suspects fled the scene in their vehicle before law enforcement arrived. Police later established checkpoints across different parts of the city and launched a search operation to trace and arrest those responsible.
