Over 50 students test positive for COVID-19 in Punjab

LAHORE: More than 50 students, three teachers and a staffer tested positive for the novel COVID-19 in various schools in Punjab on Monday.

Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department Secretary Captain (retd) Muhammad Usman confirmed that 51 students and three teachers were diagnosed with COVID-19.

He said that nine classrooms of various educational institutions have been sealed for violation of guidelines issued by government.

Usman said various teams of the health department had taken samples of 28,887 students. Of them, results of 6,168 students came out negative while 41 students were diagnosed with the virus.

Schools, colleges and universities across Pakistan reopened last Tuesday, ending a nearly six-month-long closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to details shared by the education department Balochistan, so far four universities of the province including Agriculture and Watermarine, Engineering University Khuzdar and others have been closed till September 26 after the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The department, in its report, further stated that a college and 10 schools have also been closed after a rise in COVID-19 cases in the province.

It may be noted that so far 35 educational institutions in Balochistan have been shut over failing to implement coronavirus SOPs.

At least 633 people have been infected and four have lost their lives in Pakistan due to the coronavirus on Monday.

According to the latest figures released by the National Command and Operations Center, the number of active cases of coronavirus in the country has risen to 7,065 and 292,869 patients have recovered. The coronavirus has killed 965,068 people worldwide and infected 31,240,262.

Around the world, 22,835,459 people infected with the coronavirus have recovered and the number of active cases has come down to 7,439,735. The United States ranks first among countries infected with the coronavirus, with 241,188 deaths and more than 740,000 people diagnosed with the virus.

India ranks second in the world in terms of corona cases where the total number of corona cases has increased from 5.485 million. The total number of deaths from corona in India has reached 87,909.
