The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday, marking a significant morning for Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Wicked.
Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language film produced in France, led the pack with an impressive 13 nominations. Among these were nods for Best Picture and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history as the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Oscar.
Another musical, Wicked, the celebrated adaptation of the Broadway hit, closely followed with 10 nominations. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the opulent reimagining of The Wizard of Oz earned recognition for Best Picture and acting nominations for its stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

Brady Corbet’s postwar epic The Brutalist, shot in VistaVision and distributed by A24, also secured 10 nominations. These included Best Picture, Best Director, and acting nods for Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones.
