KARACHI: A series of alleged police encounters across Karachi late Saturday night resulted in the death of one robber, the arrest of six suspects, and injuries to two police officers, officials said.
The most high-profile incident occurred in the Quaidabad area, where members of the so-called White Corolla gang opened fire on a police mobile. Two officers sustained injuries in the attack, while police retaliatory fire killed a most wanted robber, according to officials.
In a separate encounter in Shah Latif Town near the Super Highway, police said two suspicious men opened fire when signaled to stop for checking. The suspects fled while firing, injuring officers Ghulam Abbas and Zubair, who were shifted to hospital. Police returned fire, killing one accused while the other escaped. Weapons, mobile phones, and a car were recovered from the deceased.
Another clash near Jahangirabad led to the arrest of two suspects, Gul Hassan and Ikram, both injured in the exchange of fire. A pistol, a replica pistol, and an unregistered motorcycle were seized.
In Baldia Town’s Abidaabad Al-Fath Ground, rescue officials confirmed two robbers, Javed and Asif, were arrested in injured condition after a firefight.
Meanwhile, near the Northern Bypass, police arrested two suspects, Shahzeb and Amjad, including one injured, while their accomplices managed to escape. Two pistols, mobile phones, cash, and a motorcycle were recovered.
Separately, in Awami Colony, two youths identified as Athar and Abdul Razaq were injured when police opened fire after signaling them to stop. Witnesses said the motorcycle riders sped away, prompting officers to chase and fire. Local residents alleged the youths were innocent and later assaulted them after the shooting. The incident sparked protests in the area, with residents demanding registration of a case against the concerned SHO and officials.
SSP Korangi Fida Hussain Janori took notice of the Awami Colony incident, ordering a thorough inquiry. He stated that if negligence or misuse of authority is proven, departmental action will be taken against those responsible.
