LAHORE: Omar Sarfraz Cheema was on Sunday sworn in as new Govenor Punjab.
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Amir Bhatti administered the oath during a dignified ceremony at the Governor’s House in Lahore. Punjab’s acting Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, IGP Punjab, Chief Secretary and other dignitaries were also present.
Earlier in the day, President Alvi terminated Chaudhry Sarwar as Punjab Governor and appointed Omar Cheema for the post.
“While acting upon the advice of the Prime Minister, President Dr. Arif Alvi has approved the removal of Mr. Mohammad Sarwar from the position of Governor of Punjab and appointed Mr. Omar Sarfraz Cheema as Governor Punjab under the Article 101 of the Constitution of Pakistan,” said a notice by President’s House.
PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said federal government had dismissed Governor Punjab Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar.
He said that as per the Constitution, deputy speaker will act as acting governor of the province. Later, he shared that PTI’s former information secretary Cheema had been appointed the new Punjab governor.
The announcement also came hours before a crucial session of the National Assembly on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan as well as a sitting of the Punjab Assembly to elect a new leader of the house following Usman Buzdar’s resignation.
It was unclear why Sarwar was unceremoniously removed from his post. It was later removed that Sarwar wasblamed for persuading Aleem Khan group to vote in favour of PML-N candidate Hamza Shehbaz for the chief minister.
The federal government reportedly removed Sarwar from his post on PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s request, for allegedly campaigning for Hamza Shahbaz in the election of the chief minister.
