The National Highway Authority (NHA) has made the M-tag compulsory for all vehicles on motorways from Tuesday (February 6, 2024). Without it, no vehicle will be allowed to use any motorway across the country.
The decision, aimed at enhancing convenience for the public and ensuring a smooth flow of traffic at motorway entry and exit points, requires motorists to affix M-tags to their vehicles.
To obtain M-tags, vehicle owners can visit the customer care center, presenting their vehicle registration book/card and CNIC. The NHA spokesperson emphasized that vehicles without M-tags will not be granted entry onto motorways after Monday.
A prior announcement by the National Highways & Motorway Police (NH&MP) on December 29, 2023, had warned of the impending requirement for M-tags starting January 1, 2024. Car owners and passenger buses lacking M-tags were notified of a ban on motorway entry from that date, accompanied by fines imposed by the NH&MP.
This regulation applies across all motorways, including the Islamabad-Peshawar M-1, Lahore-Abdul Hakeem M-3, Pindi Bhattian-Multan M-4, Multan-Sukkur M-5, Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan M-14, and Hasan Abdal-Mansehra Expressway E-35. With approximately 150,000 vehicles traversing the Islamabad-Lahore M-2 Motorway daily, those equipped with M-tags can smoothly pass through checkpoints, avoiding traffic congestion.
