PARIS: The ‘No Smoking Day’ is being observed today globally on 11th March 2020.
Every year, this day is observed to raise awareness about the harmful health effects of smoking and to encourage the people who smoke to quit smoking.
This day also celebrates the people who have quit the habit in the past.
This campaign began in 1984 and is now organised by the British Heart Foundation. There is no specific theme announced this year for No Smoking Day.
Smoking is injurious and hazardous to health. The addiction to smoking is caused by the release of dopamine in the brain by nicotine when one inhales cigarette smoke.
Smoking remains a major player in morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Smoking doesn’t just affect the health of the smoker, it can also have the same negative effects on those breathing in the second-hand smoke – also known as passive smoking.
Smoking remains a major public health issue in Pakistan. It is one of the leading risk factors for a number of illnesses including lung and other malignancies.
It has been reported that up to 87 percent cases of lung carcinoma are detected in smokers. Smoking generally increases the risk of developing lung carcinoma by 10 fold and people with 40 or more pack-years history may have up to 60 times increased risk of developing lung cancer.
