Karachi has witnessed a surge in cases of a new virus as the weather undergoes a transition.
Dr. Halar Shaikh, the Registrar at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center(JPMC) Hospital, highlighted that the city traditionally experiences an uptick in various infections during weather changes, and the emergence of a new virus, adenovirus, poses an increased threat in Karachi.
Adenovirus typically manifests with symptoms such as cold, cough, flu, and fever. Individuals affected by the virus generally recover within two to three days with adequate rest.
Dr. Halar emphasized that while the virus can affect people of all ages throughout the year, special precautions should be taken by the elderly, asthmatic, and diabetic patients. Failure to take precautions may lead to pneumonia due to weakened immunity.
In response to the situation, Dr. Halar Shaikh recommended preventive measures against the virus. He urged people to refrain from handshakes to curb the spread of the virus and advised citizens to avoid consuming food from outside during this season.
Taking these precautions, especially during weather changes, can contribute to minimizing the impact and spread of the new virus in Karachi.
