LONDON: Netflix has refused to add a disclaimer to the beginning of each episode of ‘The Crown’ stating that its lavish drama about Britain’s royal family is a work of fiction.
Netflix was urged last week by British Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden to add the disclaimer, in the wake of the broadcast of the drama’s fourth series.
In a statement issued today (Sunday), Netflix said, “We have always presented The Crown as a drama, and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.”
“As a result, we have no plans. and see no need, to add a disclaimer,” it added. Critics of the show are of the view that a number of ‘The Crown’ scenes are invented which audiences may not realise.
Helena Bonham-Carter, who currently stars as Princess Margaret, also called for adding a disclaimer, saying Netflix had a ‘moral responsibility’ to add one.
The Crown creator Peter Morgan, whose work also includes recent-history dramas The Queen and Frost/Nixon, has defended his work, saying it is thoroughly researched and true in spirit.
The latest series features Diana, Princess of Wales – played by Emma Corrin – and dramatises her relationship with Prince Charles.
