ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction in electricity tariffs, providing much-needed relief to consumers.
Utilizing the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism, the authority has sanctioned a decrease of Rs1.14 per unit for the month of October.
Following a public hearing held on November 26, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) proposed a reduction of Rs1.1 per unit, which was subsequently ratified.
This price reduction applies to all customers consuming more than 100 units from distribution companies (DISCOs), although it does not extend to electric vehicle charging stations or lifeline customers. NEPRA has confirmed this adjustment through an official notification.
Additionally, NEPRA announced a special winter package for electricity consumers, effective from December to February. This initiative aims to promote higher electricity consumption during the winter months by offering substantial discounts to both residential and commercial users.
NEPRA indicated that the cost of an additional unit under the winter package will be Rs26.7 higher than the previous year. Although not part of the federal government’s initial proposal, this package will also benefit previously excluded industrial net metering and weighing consumers.
