National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is likely to announce a significant reduction in electricity prices for all consumers in the country including Karachi.
As per the details, Nepra will hold a hearing today on the request from distribution companies. The Discos have requested a reduction of nearly 2 PKR per unit in electricity prices, which could provide relief of up to 52.12 billion PKR to electricity consumers. The price reduction has been requested under the adjustment for the second quarter of the current fiscal year.
The request includes a reduction of 50.66 billion PKR in capacity charges, 2.66 billion PKR in transmission and distribution losses, and 2.69 billion PKR in operations and maintenance. The quarterly adjustment for October to December 2024 will also apply to K-Electric.
On the other hand, electric vehicle charging stations may be provided electricity at 23.57 PKR per unit, but after revisions in taxes, the electricity cost for charging stations will be 39 PKR per unit.
The government has approached Nepra to set new rates for EV charging stations, and Nepra will hear the federal government’s request today.
