Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a 19.5 paisa per unit increase in electricity prices for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25.
The hike will add an additional burden of Rs. 1.18 billion on consumers.
According to a notification issued by NEPRA, the additional amount will be collected through December bills. However, the increase will not apply to lifeline and prepaid consumers.
On the other hand, Karachi’s electricity consumers may see some relief, as K-Electric has requested a 0.27 paisa per unit decrease in electricity prices. The request has been submitted to NEPRA, which will consider it today. If approved, consumers may receive a relief of up to Rs. 460 million.
The development comes as the government has been working to reduce electricity prices nationwide. Recently, the Minister for Energy had predicted a reduction of up to Rs. 5 per unit in electricity prices due to a review of fuel prices and power purchase agreements.
