Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday categorically rejected reports suggesting the removal of President Asif Ali Zardari and the possible enactment of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, urging the public not to be misled by unverified claims circulating on social media.
Speaking to the media during his visit to Rohri, Sindh, on the eve of Ashura, the minister was asked to comment on recent reports implying that the presidency was about to change hands and that another constitutional amendment was being considered.
Naqvi dismissed the speculation as baseless, advising the public and the media to disregard such narratives, particularly during the solemn days of Ashura.
He appealed to journalists to refrain from engaging in political speculation out of respect for the religious observance.
“Certain individuals appear disturbed by the unprecedented alignment among the political leadership, government, and military establishment. These elements are deliberately spreading false narratives to create confusion,” Naqvi said.
His remarks came in the context of recent political developments, notably the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) securing a simple majority in the National Assembly. This followed the Election Commission of Pakistan’s restoration of reserved seats in accordance with a ruling by the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench.
The decision increased the ruling coalition’s strength in the lower house from 218 to 235 members, effectively granting it a two-thirds majority.
