The resignation of Balochistan National Party (BNP-M) chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal has been accepted by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, it emerged on Wednesday.
According to local media reports, Ayaz Sadiq approved the resignation on Tuesday night after nearly 17 months. It is worth noting that during this period, the BNP chief had continued to avail himself of the perks and privileges of a lawmaker.
Mengal, who was elected to the National Assembly from Khuzdar’s NA-256 constituency in the February 2024 general elections, submitted his resignation on September 3, 2024.
He cited the deteriorating situation in Balochistan and expressed a lack of confidence in the state as the reasons for his decision.
The BNP-M chief announced his resignation during a session of the National Assembly, where he said he regretted being unable to serve the people of the province. He also criticized being denied the right to govern and voiced his distrust in the overall system.
His resignation came amid a wave of deadly attacks across the province in August, which claimed more than 50 lives, including 14 security personnel.
