The local military in Myanmar conducted a crackdown on online fraud centers, rescuing hundreds of foreign nationals, including 38 Pakistanis.
After crossing into Myanmar, the Thai Army rescued the 38 Pakistanis and transferred them to the Bangkok Immigration Center. The released Pakistanis will be deported in phases, and Thai authorities have written a letter to the Government of Pakistan regarding the matter, local media reported on Wednesday.
The Thai government said that another 60 Pakistanis are currently staying in a shelter house in Myanmar after escaping from the fraud centers.
The Thai authorities have urged Pakistani institutions to take action against the agents after interrogating the deported individuals. Thailand has also demanded that the names of the deported Pakistanis be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) for five years.
According to FIA officials, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia have become hubs for online fraud. The fraud centers post online job advertisements for call centers to recruit workers.
FIA officials said that young people are brought in on work visas and then detained. They warned Pakistanis not to fall for work visa offers or online job scams in these countries.
It should be noted that Myanmar hosts numerous illegal call centers that are involved in cybercrimes like “pig butchering” romance scams, investment fraud, and human trafficking, often operating within large complexes in border regions like KK Park.
