Following the contentious passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, Health Minister Mustafa Kamal moved to quell political tensions on Monday, promising that the issues concerning local governments sought by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) will be addressed soon.
During a Karachi press conference, Kamal expressed confidence that the necessary changes would be included in the 28th Constitutional Amendment, which he projects will be introduced within the “coming months.”
The MQM-P, along with other opposition members, had protested the 27th Amendment, leading Kamal to previously indicate that their proposals related to Article 140-A (Local Governments) would instead be pushed to the next amendment.
He confirmed on Monday that the government remains committed to this plan, noting that the MQM-P’s demands were initially slated for the 26th Amendment, which was passed last October.
