Police in Ahmedpur East, a city in South Punjab, have arrested a man for allegedly posing as Imam Mehdi and hurting the religious sentiments of the public.
According to police, the suspect has been identified as Syed Tahseen Abbasi, a resident of Hamza Town. Law enforcement officials said City Ahmedpur East police station received information that a man was misleading people in the area by claiming that he had received divine revelation and was the final Imam Mehdi.
Following the tip-off, Sub-Inspector Rasool Bakhsh, along with a police team, conducted a raid in Hamza Town and arrested the suspect from a street in the locality.
Police said that during initial questioning, the suspect stood by his claim, and his statement was recorded on video.
A smartphone was also recovered from his possession and has been taken into custody for further investigation.
A case has been registered against the suspect under Sections 295-A and 298 of the Pakistan Penal Code for hurting religious sentiments.
Authorities said further investigation is under way and legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.
