Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai directly linked ongoing nationwide protests in Iran to “long-standing, state-imposed restrictions on girls’ and women’s autonomy” across all public spheres, including education.
Malala described the restrictions as part of a broader system of “gendered control” characterized by state-led segregation, surveillance, and punishment.
She asserted that Iranian girls and women are demanding “a life with dignity” and the fundamental right to determine their own political future.

The activist emphasized that Iran’s future must be driven by its own people and specifically include the leadership of Iranian women and girls, rather than being dictated by “external forces or oppressive regimes.”
Reaffirming her support, Malala stated she stands with the people of Iran in their quest for freedom and warned that their voices have been “silenced for decades.”
These comments come as Iran faces a severe crackdown on protests that began in late December 2025.
As of January 13, 2026, human rights organizations report a death toll reaching into the thousands amid a nationwide internet blackout.
