ARY Digital’s new drama Main Manto Nahi Hoon is getting attention for breaking a common stereotype in Pakistani dramas — the negative portrayal of a “phuppo” (paternal aunt).
In the first episode, veteran actress Saima Noor plays Suraiyya, a strong and protective aunt who stands up for her niece, played by Sajal Aly. Instead of being shown as a troublemaker, Suraiyya supports her niece’s dream of getting higher education. When the girl’s father refuses to let her attend university, Suraiyya takes a bold stand, even threatening a hunger strike. She later gets her niece admitted by using her influence.
The drama also stars Humayun Saeed, Sanam Saeed, Asif Raza Mir, and others. While the storyline focuses on a family feud, it’s the loving bond between Phuppo and her niece that has captured viewers’ hearts.
Fans on social media praised the show for changing the usual negative image of phuppos in dramas. Many called the relationship between Suraiyya and her niece both powerful and emotional. Some, however, felt the drama introduced too many characters too quickly, but still appreciated the fresh take on female relationships.
