Senior politician Mahmood Moulvi has written an open letter to jailed founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, discussing the party’s current strategy, past governance, and future course of action.
In his letter, Moulvi said he was writing with a heavy heart and deep respect for Imran Khan. He recalled that Khan had presented the vision of a “Naya Pakistan,” promising an end to corruption, rule of law, strong institutions, and a merit-based economy. He noted that PTI’s long struggle and sacrifices inspired an entire generation.
However, he expressed regret that after coming to power, the vision was not translated into major or transformative reforms. He said the government largely focused on short-term relief measures like food programmes, while key areas such as governance, the economy, and institutional reforms were neglected.
The letter also criticised the “Buzdar model” in Punjab and cited the influence of Farah Gogi and corruption scandals as major factors behind declining public trust.
Moulvi further wrote that after losing power, PTI’s narrative shifted significantly, focusing more on the establishment rather than political parties, which he said harmed the party. According to him, despite claims of popularity, PTI currently lacks clear direction, with many of its key leaders and workers in jail.
He also pointed out that flawed political strategy during elections created difficulties for the party. He advised Imran Khan to reassess policies and formulate a new strategy in light of changing global and regional dynamics.
Referring to recent diplomatic developments, he said Pakistan played a positive role in easing a major global crisis, which has been appreciated internationally, and described it as an opportunity the country should utilise.
He urged PTI leadership to reactivate senior and experienced members and strengthen internal consultation.
In conclusion, Mahmood Moulvi offered to play a mediating role along with some colleagues to help reduce political tensions in the country and prioritise national interest.
