LAHORE: The City Traffic Police Lahore has intensified its crackdown against vehicle owners using fake, tampered and non-standard number plates to evade e-challans.
According to the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, cases have been registered against 88 motorcycles and luxury vehicles for installing bogus number plates during the last two months.
The CTO said that during the ongoing special campaign, challan tickets were issued to 15,974 vehicles and motorcycles found running without number plates or displaying “Applied For” plates.
Action was also taken against 9,382 motorcycles and vehicles for not installing number plates as per the prescribed excise pattern or using fancy number plates. In addition, 9,218 vehicles were challaned for keeping number plates crooked, twisted, broken or concealed.
The CTO stated that more than 50,000 motorcycle and vehicle owners were also sensitized about traffic rules for minor violations during the campaign.
He clarified that car owners are being fined Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 while motorcyclists are being fined Rs 1,000 for tampering with number plates. Cases are also being registered against those using bogus number plates under fraud provisions.
Directing citizens to use their new universal number in case of vehicle transfer instead of the old registration number, the CTO Lahore said criminal elements often resort to fake or altered number plates to hide their identity, and indiscriminate action against such elements will continue.
