Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has introduced robotic surgery for the first time, hosting a pioneering workshop where British and Pakistani surgeons carried out live, technology-assisted procedures, officials confirmed.
The event took place at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar and was organized by the hospital’s urology unit in collaboration with visiting specialists from the United Kingdom.
Robotic surgery is an advanced technique that allows surgeons to perform operations with enhanced precision and control, using miniature instruments and high-resolution cameras for detailed internal views.
During the workshop, surgical teams performed complex procedures using robotic-assisted systems, which were broadcast live on large screens in the hospital auditorium to train medical staff.
Senior UK-based surgeon Prof. Dr. Mateen, alongside Dr. Azra Ghani, head of LRH’s urology unit, led the operations and demonstrated the use of precision instruments and high-definition imaging technology.
Dr. Ghani said the initiative aims to introduce modern surgical innovations to the public healthcare sector, expanding access to advanced medical techniques for patients.
This follows Islamabad’s PIMS Hospital, which performed the capital’s first robotic surgery last November, using a state-of-the-art Tomaye surgical robot with guidance from UK specialists and local experts, marking a milestone in Pakistan’s adoption of robotic surgery.
