The initial investigation report on the attack targeting a convoy carrying food, medicine, and other essential supplies in Kurram, Pakistan, has brought new revelations, as reported by national media.
According to a report by ARY News on Saturday, just days after a peace agreement was reached between warring tribes, violence erupted in the troubled region once again. Kurram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud sustained injuries when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle and other official cars.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:35 am, also injured a police officer and a Frontier Corps (FC) personnel. The attack took place amid ongoing negotiations between local authorities and militants to clear the road for the convoy’s safe passage.
Authorities have pledged swift action against the perpetrators, with a joint investigation report by police and security agencies already submitted to the provincial government. According to local officials, the attack happened in the Bagan area of Lower Kurram.
DC Mehsud was rushed to Lower Alizai Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable. Notably, DC Mehsud has played a crucial role in efforts to restore peace in the area.
The convoy under attack was the first to transport essential goods to Kurram, protected by a security detail comprising police and other personnel to ensure its safety. Earlier reports indicated that the Kurram peace deal would take effect from Saturday, January 4, with passenger convoys traveling to Parachinar under a security cordon.
The peace agreement, signed during a Grand Jirga, mandates the demolition of all bunkers within 15 days and the collection and handover of all arms to the government. These measures aim to restore normalcy in the region.
However, despite the peace deal, sit-ins continue in Parachinar and the Bagan area of Lower Kurram. Protesters are demanding the government reopen all roads, including the main highway, to guarantee security and free movement.
The situation remains tense, but authorities hope the peace agreement’s implementation will bring lasting stability to the region.
